Post Conference observations 09.10.07

Today it took place the "Islamic countries, secularism and Iraq" conference.
The most important thing come out was the importance of the Ottoman Empire role during the history of relationship between politics and religious power in the Muslim world.

During the XIXth century the Ottoman Empire tried to compete with the European countries. This feeling of changement came to the reformation period called "Tanzimat" (1839-1876). In the secularization sphere, most important changement have been in rights and training contexts. Dhimmi statute has been abolished, so all the Ottoman citizens became equal, with no difference on their religious origin. Some secular schools have been introduced, depriving the ulema (religious power) to have the monopoly on the school religious system.
This changement way had its peak in 1924 when Ataturk abolished the Caliphate istitution to embrace the State-Nation system.
For this reason Prof. Nordio said: "Turkey model is a guarantee model because it gave to other countries a model of negotiation between religious and secularism".
